What Do Dental X-Rays Actually Show?
Dental x-rays show what a visual exam cannot. The inside of each tooth, the bone underneath your gums, the spaces between teeth where decay likes to hide, and any roots, nerves, or developing teeth below the surface. A regular exam catches a lot, but small cavities, early bone loss, infected roots, and impacted teeth often live in places only an x-ray can reach.
At ComfyDent Smiles, we use digital x-rays rather than traditional film. The image shows up on a screen within seconds, the radiation dose is up to 80 percent lower than older equipment, and we can zoom in and walk through what we see with you in real time. Nothing is filed away in a folder you never look at. The picture is part of the conversation.
Benefits of Dental X-Rays
A visual exam tells us part of the story. X-rays fill in the rest. Together they let us catch problems early, plan treatment accurately, and explain everything we see in plain terms.

Catch Issues Early
Small cavities between teeth, early bone loss, and infections at the root often show on x-rays long before they cause pain. Early catch means smaller treatment.

Lower Radiation
Digital sensors use up to 80 percent less radiation than older film, while giving us a clearer image. Less exposure, better information, every visit.

Better Planning
For implants, root canals, and major restorative work, x-rays let us map the work down to the millimeter before treatment starts. Fewer surprises, smoother results.
Are X-Rays Right for Your Visit?
X-rays are part of most routine exams, but how often we take them depends on you. New patients usually need a full set on the first visit so we have a baseline to compare against over time. After that, the schedule loosens. Adults with healthy teeth and no history of cavities or gum disease may go three to five years between full sets, with bitewings every one to two years at cleanings.
Other moments call for imaging too. A tooth that suddenly hurts, a crown that feels off, a swollen area along the gum line, or planning for implants, root canals, Invisalign, or full mouth rehabilitation. If you have not had x-rays in years, or have records from a previous dentist we can pull, bring that in and we will only image what we actually need.

What to Expect During Your Visit
Before Your Appointment
There is nothing special to do before x-rays. A few small notes help the visit run smoothly and keep imaging to only what is needed.
- 01
Bring records from your previous dentist if you have had x-rays recently.
- 02
Tell us at check in if you are pregnant or think you may be.
- 03
Remove jewelry, glasses, or hairpins that could appear in the image.
After Your Appointment
X-rays themselves require no recovery. You can eat, drink, and go back to your day right away.
- 01
Ask to see your images on the screen if we have not already shown you.
- 02
Save any treatment recommendations on paper or by email for reference.
- 03
Call (512) 540-4644 with any questions after you have had time to read the plan.

Digital Imaging That Shows More with Less
Our office uses digital x-ray sensors instead of film, which means images appear on a screen within seconds and use a fraction of the radiation older equipment required. For larger views, panoramic imaging captures the full mouth, jaw, and sinus area in one pass, which is helpful for wisdom teeth, jaw concerns, and treatment planning. You see each image alongside Dr. Shah, so any finding is grounded in something visible, not a vague description.
For implant and restorative cases, 3D imaging lets Dr. Shah measure bone height and root position before treatment starts. Everything is mapped in advance, which is what separates a smooth procedure from one full of surprises. As a prosthodontist, he relies on that imaging to plan how the final restoration will sit, not just where the implant or crown will go. The imaging is the planning step, and the planning is what makes the actual treatment quieter and shorter.
